The only person you should be comparing yourself to, is the person you were 6, 12 or 24 months ago. In our recent podcast we talk about why comparing yourself to others is super toxic and what are some tips to overcome this.

We thought we would cover some of the topic here, but feel free to jump over to our podcast and listen to the full discussion.

Comparing yourself to others can not only be related to health and fitness but also life in general, whatever stage you are at in your life. But it’s important to know that comparing yourself to others if super unrealistic, why?

- Everyone is at different stages in their life

- Everyones bodies are different

- The way your body reacts to certain foods and exercise is different to the way someone elses body reacts.

- Everyone is on a different journey wanting to reach different goals

- Everyones schedules are different

When you scroll through social media, it’s important to know that you are viewing peoples highlight reels, we don’t see what happens behind the scenes (apart from those very few influences who like to share all aspects and be real with their audience). This often has a negative impact and we tend to think negative thoughts like ‘’why cant I be as skinny as her’’ or ‘’why am I not that far ahead like her/him’’.

These negative thoughts can also increase stress and have implications on your health and majority of the time result in you gaining weight or going the complete opposite way you want to go.

The best advice when it comes to social media that we have received over the past few years is to follow people or influences that inspire you, that motivate you to be the best version of yourself and people that you can learn from and be educated from. This will make you feel a lot better and more positive when scrolling through social media rather than always feeling like crap because you are constantly comparing yourself.

The most important takeaway from this is to also only ever compare yourself to your past self. We tend to forget about our progress and where we have come from or were 12 months ago.

It helps to look back every now and then and see how far you have come towards your goals and give yourself some credit. Because it isn’t easy, especially these days. Try writing down your current status every month and then in 6 months time look back at your first entry, or take some progress photos. This has a huge positive impact on your mindset and is a great motivation to not give up and continue working on your goals.

Because no one wants to be miserable everyday and willow in self-pity, you want to enjoy the process, be happy and excited.
