Tips to building good habits and consistent routines

This week in the podcast, we spoke about building good habits and by breaking down your goals, you end up creating consistent routines. So how can build these habits? Whilst it may seem hard the first time you implement them, it definitely gets easier over time. Here’s some tips that will help you build your habits:
Start Small!
The first tip to building good habits is to introduce one habit every week, avoid writing a list of 10 habits you want to implement and then try and include them all from day one this will lead to failure. As these habits are new, you have to start off small to fit them into your day and eventually workout a good routine to suit you. So stick with 1 habit a week and build from there.
Reflect
The second tip to building these habits is always check in with yourself. Are these habits actually working out for you? Is it something you can maintain over the long term and do you actually like it?
It’s important to reflect on the past couple weeks and check in with how you are feeling so you can make adjustments if you need to and don’t continue doing something if its more of a burden to you than getting you closer to your goals.
Tracking
The third tip is to set reminders or to do lists to help you build those habits, there are plenty of great apps available on your device to help you track your habits and to set reminders so you are less likely to forget.
You can also use your calendar. Google Calendar has a great habit and goal building tool with the ability to set reminders.
Or write it down! Sometimes it feels more real when we write things down. Tick it off each day to track how you are going and reflect at the end of the day.
‘’If you don’t track, you won’t improve’’.
Grab a friend!
Having a buddy is a great way to help keep each other accountable, support and motivate each other to stay on top of your habits and goals. So grab a friend or family member and embark on your journey together.
Assess your environment
What is your environment like? is it motivating you or is it holding you back?
You’d be surprised how much your environment has an impact on your health and you’re journey to achieve your goals.
If this is something you can’t control, workout ways or alternatives that you can try implement, for example, if you have a load of sugary sweets in your pantry for the family, prepare your meals and snacks in advance so you are prepared and less likely to grab something else..
Know the benefits
Ask yourself why are you on this journey? How do you feel after completiny each habit? How is it going to help you in the long term?
Remember how rewarding it is going to be and how everyday you complete a habit, it will get you closer to your goals. It’s sometimes helpful to think about your day ahead, if you have a busy day ahead, maybe working out in the morning will be helpful and give you that extra energy you need plus, you’re more likely to complete your workout in the morning rather than in the afternoon after a long day of work.
A bit of R&R
