When we talk about fad diets, what do we mean?

Fad diets are usually some sort of specialised diet that claims to be a quick fix to weight loss, restrictive of certain foods such as fats and carbs for example and usually have a time limit such as 30 days etc.

When embarking on any new diet, its important to do your research first. Most fad diets do not have legitimate studies to prove what they are actually promoting, you could be restricting yourself of vital nutrients that you actually need to function daily and they have an unrealistic timeline, which means they are only for the short term.

Majority of people who try a fad diet for 30 days (as an example), don’t develop healthy long term habits and when that 30 days is up, majority usually put the weight they lost back on or sometimes even more weight. This is when yo-yoing happens and people look to other quick fixes or fad diet to try. This is why going on a diet doesnt work.

When it comes to your food, It's important to get the right nutrients for your body to ensure your organs are working properly.

If you label something as a diet, it usually has a negative vibe surrounding it and brings up negative thoughts. Instead of calling it a diet, look at it as a way to improve your lifestyle and become the best version of yourself.

Make small changes in the food you eat and improve the bad foods you eat for long term lifestyle change. It’s important to still have the things you enjoy in life, and be able to maintain your diet, find your balance.

Eating a balance of carbs, fats, proteins and ensuring your body is getting enough nutrients it needs is for the long term, nothing is a quick fix. By doing these small shifts in the food you eat daily, you build long term healthier habits and your mindset shifts to a more positive and energised.

This helps when you slip, say you might have a doughnut and your relationship with food is so bad you spiral and ruin your progress because feel crap from having that doughnut and give up on the rest of the day.

When you have a better relationship with food, you might slip and have a doughnut but you acknowledge that and factor that in, and continue on with your day ensuring you eat well and make up for it in exercise or increase veggie intake.

Your relationship with food is based on emotions as well, if you are feeling crappy, have some good foods to bring your energy up rather than eating shitty foods that will make you feel worse.

It’s always important to check with a health care professional before embarking on any kind of diet or if you decide to restrict certain types of foods.

And remember to take it back to basics, eat wholesome foods and enjoy your favourite foods every once in a while for a more realistic healthier lifestyle.
